I Fell for the Hype: Erubiel Durazo

Postby d18Mike » Fri Apr 30, 2004 2:19 am

Prior to the draft, virtually every Fantasy Pundit (oxymoron there, I'm sure of it), was hailing Erubiel Durazo as one of this year's great breakout candidates.

And I fell for it. Shame on me. :-/

In retrospect, and having looked at his stats in some depth, I can't see what leads people to rave about his potential, He's 29. Never hit over .270 (unless you count a 52-game rookie season) Never popped over 21 HRs and is in a power position. He absolutely can't field and he's about a step slower than Mo Vaughn.

Was there some herd mentality at play here ... or am I still missing something.

Well, prior to last year, he had posted back-to-back seasons with .537+ SLG and OPS above .9. That's pretty solid. In 593AB in 2000-2002 (About one season) he had 36HR, 115R, and 119 RBI. I took him late this year, and have since dropped him, but I think he was a legitimate pick. Take a look at Jay Buhner's numbers from 1988-1990. Pretty similar.

He still could come back. It is, as they say, early.

I think you were sold on some year-old hype. Last year was supposed to be the breakout season.

The guy has soo much power its not funny - any scout will tell you that. He jus needs to get adjusted to playing everyday....last year was the first time that he got the chance to do that.

I've been chuckling about this thread since it went up. Durazo has hype? Not from me. Lmao! :-D

Extremely fitting that he hits 2, 2 run bombs tonight. Lol. !+)

Yeah I have him - it's interesting. I have been dangling him in trades, but I don't want to part with him for fear of him having a monster season that he's capable of having going 30 HR 100 RBI ish....I don't know :-?

The guy's got a great eye, so I picked him up yesterday in a league where they count walks. Of course he wasn't in the lineup for me today. :,-(

I still think the guy is marginal at best in an 12 team league that doesn't count walks or OPS. An optimistic .275/30/100 isn't great production from the 1B spot in a 12 team league.

Drafted him in the last round, then traded him and Finley for B.Giles. :-D
Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!

I havn't heard hype about Durazo since a couple of years ago when he hit 3 HR's in his first game back for Arizona. People were all over him at that point. Since then, I havn't heard much about him.

But the 2 HR's tonight is kinda ironic. Don't ya think. A little toooooooooooooo........OK I'll stop :-D
