''Pierre is not going to play for a while'' Jack McKeon

Postby wrveres » Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:04 am

Not looking good. :-o

Marlins manager Jack McKeon said the team will reevaluate Juan Pierre's strained right calf today before deciding when the center fielder can return to the lineup. But for the first time Sunday, McKeon expressed doubt that his spark plug leadoff hitter will be ready for opening day.

''He may. Or he may not,'' McKeon said. ``Pierre is not going to play for a while. He will not play [today]. He will not play Tuesday. And probably won't play Wednesday.''

Pierre, who led the National League with 221 hits last year and had at least 200 hits in three of his four full big-league seasons, is a key part of the Marlins' attack. But he has been out since March 7 and hasn't run full speed in weeks. McKeon said when Pierre does return, he likely will be used as a designated hitter in a minor-league game to get some at-bats in before he tries to run the bases or play the field.

''When the trainer tells me that he's running OK or jogging OK, that he's having no problems with his leg, then we'll sit down and think [what to do],'' McKeon said. ``I say this with reservations, but I don't see him not being in the opening day lineup.''

Pierre, who has been stretching with his teammates and hitting in the batting cages, has declined to talk about his injury or the progress of his rehabilitation.

Very very not good. Looks like I'll be losing steals for a while in a few of my leagues. :~(

Why couldn't I just get Ichiro to fall to me? :-[

"not ready for opening day" which means he might miss, at MOST five games, its a strained calf, not the end of the world, thats not even a round downgrade at draft time, dont panic

I agree guys don't panic. I actually knew this information yesterday and still didn't hesitate to take him in the 3rd round.

He had an MRI which showed no serious damage, so just don't expect much out of him in the first couple of weeks, and he should be ready to go for you by then.

Am I crazy, or is that 3 days, (in spring training, no less) that he's labeling as "a while"?

Sure...It may very well be longer than that....But I wouldn't be getting to riled up about it just yet. Who cares if he misses opening day? Is it really gonna kill your team?

Then, again...I don't have Pierre on any of my teams...

If it were a hammy, that may be true, but a strained calf is not that big a deal.

This really sucks for Pierre owners. Anybody who had Dave Roberts last year knows how important leg muscles are for guys like him and Pierre. Bad leg = no infield hits = a LOT less SB's. This will affect not only his steals but also his BA and R as well. Lets just hope he's fully recovered when he comes back so he doesn't re-injure it. Actually I wouldn't minid him being out, I don't own him in any leagues }:-)

I understand the Pierre owners are trying to look at this in the best possible light but this is bad news. :-o
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
