Utility Position Help Please

Postby Sandman of Endless » Wed Apr 20, 2005 10:40 am

I am in a 16 team 22 man roster H2H points league. One of the batting positions is a Utility (anybody). I am currently using Dmitri Young of Detroit there. I realize so far that we are just in the 3rd week, but I was wondering about picking up either T. Martinez of NYY of Encarncion of Fla.

My 2 guys on the bench are

Hidalgo with 32.25 pts for 56 AB
Ensburg with 30.25 pts for 43 AB

If I had the 2 available guys above their points would be :

Martinez with 58 pts for 41 AB
Encarncion with 52.25 pts for 48 AB

My other 3 OFs are Cabrera, Matsui, S. Green.
My starting 3B is D. Wright
My starting 1B is Sexson with 58.75 pts for 43 AB (for comparison).

So Martinez doesnt look that bad.

Should I drop either Hidalgo or Ensburg for Martinez or Encarncion? I would use them as filler when starters are off or on DL :~(

Thanks for any and all opinions.

I wouldn't drop Hidalgo for either either, despite his potentially crummy BA. I would consider dropping Ensburg for Tino. I would keep both over Encarnacion.

There are always wildy differing opinions on Ensberg on this board. I personally think Tino may be a safer call, but not by a very wide margin.

Thanks.

Since this is strictly a point league, the Batting average doesnt factor (just the hits). So Encarncion instead of Hidalgo? What are the thoughts about having 2 OFs from same team?

I would stick it out with Hidalgo. When he gets comfortable in Texas, he's going to go on a tear, and you'll want him around when he does.
With Tino, you pretty much know what you're going to get.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if Encarnacion returned to 20-20 .270.
I'm not even going to try to forecast Ensberg.

Therefore, since it's a utility position, and if you can use a boost in steals, my recommendation would be to dump the erratic Ensberg for Encarnacion and stick with Hidalgo. Although I don't expect this to be all that popular of an opinion, I think there are some Ensberg fans around.
