Heads up...this kid hit in the minors and is looking pretty good so far in limited action. If the phe punchless Giambi and Tino combo at 1b/DH continues, Mr. Phillips could get a shot.

He's a bit old for a prospect (and has been older than his competition in the minors for a few years now)...but he does have a pretty good bat.

Torre hates playing young guys, though...espcially when he's got a verteran that he "trusts" like Tino Martinez. Phillips should be batting against every lefty, though.

My math stinks...but, as far as I can tell, he's 4 months older than Jason Lane.

Im not sure if you would consider him a prospect because he is pretty old and has been in the minors for a while now. But yes he can hit and I remember last year he was like MVP of the triple A all star game, can't remember exactly.

He could be traded as well...

Especially when Brown joins Wright on the DL a little later.

If he continues to hit with Sierra out, Giambi doing nothing, Tino do next to nothing etc, even Torre is going to have a hard time keeping the kid out of the lineup and have to get him some ABs. At some point, you may see Phillips splitting time with the other two between 1b/DH. That of course all presumes that he is for real.

The fact is Torre loves the way Giambi swings the bat (even if he's hitting 1 for 40) and they pay him too much not to play. Tino is one of Torre's favs. Barring injury Tino and Giambi hold down the fort at 1b and DH all season
