Williamson new Cub Closer???

Postby Havok1517 » Thu Aug 11, 2005 11:56 pm

Dempster has been doing a decent job closing, but the walks have to scare everybody. I've heard instances where Wood would close (a la John Smoltz), but I just can't see the Cubs going somewhere without him in the rotation. Williamson did an excellent job closing for the Reds before being traded to the Red Sox. I really think this move could be a saving grace if Willamson is infact healthy and up to the task. What do u guys think???

I think they will keep Dempster in the closer role.

Wood can't stay healthy so they have no choice but to use him in the pen. The alternative is the DL sooner or later.

At least that is the thinking.

I doubt he closes...at least not this season.

From what I can tell this is the line of closers....
Dempster
Wood
Williamson

I really doubt Williamson will be the Cubs closer this year. As far as Wood is concerned I say just clean out his shoulder and try to get him ready for next year.

Yes, I like that list and your suggestion. Its painfully obvious the Cubs are done now, and would need a miracle to make the playoffs. So just shelf Kerry Wood now. Hes not helping anything as a middle reliever.

i could see williamson getting the job next year but longshot this year. i think they shut wood down before too long so i dont consider him a threat for saves this year.

First of all, I don't think Wood should ever close. He's too valuable in that he has the ability to go several innings.

Dempster may or may not be a successful closer and if he falters next year I can see trying Williamson.

Honestly, I think they need to use Kerry Wood as a middle reliever. He would be SO effective in that role (think Rincon/Shields/Gordon type guy or possibly even better). His shoulder should hold up, he can avoid the DL and he can eat up those middle innings (which the Cubs will need quite a bit of if Maddux retires and Wood isn't going to start).
