Rest of the way: Valverde vs. Farnsworth?

Postby duckbillgates » Sat Aug 13, 2005 4:31 pm

These two are probably the biggest FA relievers who may or may not close the rest of the way out.
Lyon's supposed to get the job back, but he looked shaky in his first appearance back, and Valverde has been unconscious of late.
On the flip side, Reitsma has blown two straight, and Farnsworth had been unhittable until a few recent outings, and a sore back may have been the culprit there.
So who do you want down the stretch?

I'd say Valverde because he's got a closers job now and has been sharp. At this point in the season, better to have a confirmed closer who has been sharp, even if he may have someone breathing down his neck if he falters, rather than a strong setup guy who might take over (or might not).

Considering Lyon was quite good, he probably gets the job back as soon as hes off the DL. But Valverde has the job right now, so hes definitely the better bet.

Agreed. Farnsworth would be the better bet if he were the closer, but he's still backed up behind Reitsma for now, and as long as he's there Valverde's the better bet. Valverde gets good K numbers too like Farnsworth, which makes the decision that much easier as long as he's closing.
