Escobar: Down the Stretch

Postby dorje3 » Sat Aug 13, 2005 9:24 pm

Kelvim Escobar's recovery from elbow surgery has gone very smoothly. In fact, Escobar claims to feel 100 percent, a figure he had not used earlier in the season when he regularly complained of elbow soreness due to a bone-spur.
He has thrown in a pair of bullpen sessions in which he was able to throw his splitter without pain or aggravation. He will throw a simulated game on Monday.
As we all know, Escobar has got the stuff pitchers dream of. Earlier this year, despite the nagging bone-spur, Escobar posted ~3.50 ERA with ~45K in 40.0 INN.
The question I pose to the Cafe:
Does Escobar return for any significant amount of time this year, and if so what kind of impact will he have?
Escobar could be a nice option come playoff time.

Ya I have had Escobar stashed on my DL all year and haven't thought about dropping him yet. Based off what he showed at moments when he was active pitching and from last season he could put up some good numbers the last few weeks once he comes back. I wont be getting rid of him.

Who will be left out of the rotation when he returns? E Santana was his replacement, but I doubt he would be demoted at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if Escobar goes to the bull pen if Santana keeps pitching well. He has been there before and could help out there. It's just quicker to get him back that way then wait for him to build up arm strength to start.

If he does go back to the pen, they can still try and work up his arm strength there. That way if Ervin starts to stumble over the long haul, Escobar is ready to take over with a fresh arm.

What is the timetable on his return? Will he return in time for Yahoo H2H playoffs? We have 3 weeks until they start, but I should have a first round bye.

this is from usa today's fantasy baseball section:

Aug. 13 After throwing what he called a "very aggressive" bullpen session yesterday, Kelvim Escobar said he would be willing to work in relief upon his return from elbow surgery, according to the LA Times. However, he's not expected back in action soon, as his rehab assignment likely won't begin until around Aug. 22.

so it sounds like beginning of september?

Some guy in my league must've read this thread last night.. :-?

Between the first three SP's auto-drafted to me (Schmidt, Escobar, Hampton), I can't tell which one let me down the most this year.. :-C
