Valverde or Nelson?

Postby warrick95 » Wed Jun 18, 2003 3:22 pm

Who do y'all think has more value? Nelson is definitely the better pitcher and will post better ERA/WHIP numbers, but let's face it. Valverde is filling in for Matt Mantei, who's little injuries turn into season-ending ones. Mantei's return has already been pushed back to early July. On the downside for Valverde, he has little experience and Mike Koplove might be getting some saves, as well. I'd like to hear some of your opinions.

I'd go with Valverde. He's got 8 k's in 4 innings. Gagne anyone? He's still young, but he's definitely got the stuff to be a good closer. Nelson is more proven, but Sasaki will be back and Nelson will be setting up again.

Short term, I'd say Nelson. Long term, Valverde

Nelson plays for the better team but has to share save opps with Rhodes and maybe Hasegawa. The most recent news on Mantei is that he is out until early July, meaning Valverde is the closer for another couple weeks. However, the news on Sasaki is that he actually now has 2 broken ribs and is out until after the all star break. Nelson would probably get more saves.
