Bobby Abreu - Jason Bay - Miguel Cabrera

These three are incredibly close in my book right now. I can't decide which one I'd select if I had the choice in a non-keeper draft. Everyone of them has some downside, but they all have tremendous upside as well. Who do you see doing what this year, and how would you rank the three?

Cabrera
There will come a day when Barry Bonds leaves baseball, and everything about the game will be the better for it.

Non-keeper, I would take struggle to choose between Bay & Abreu. MCab just has too little protection to warrant a pick ahead of the other guys.

Yeah, these players are basically interchangable (obviously they all have their own advantages, but you're not looking to add SBs etc. necessarily w/ your first round pick but rather later after your foundation is set), I personally don't want any of them with my first rounder. Bay seems to be the sexiest pick around the cafe, but say his SB conversion % decreases will they put the brakes on him? I would rank them Cabrera=Bay--Abreu.

Cabrera .330 35 HRs 100 RBIs 90 Rs 3 SBs
Bay .300 35 HRs 105 RBIs 100 Rs 15 SBs (better lineup protection)
Abreu .290 28 HRs 100 RBIs 100 Rs 23 SBs

Cabrera's 3b eligibility certainly lifts his value.

I doubt Bay runs as much as he did last season and he'll likely be walked like there's no tomorrow.

Abreu still plays in a big-time hitters park with a good lineup around him. That and the fact that Abreu has finished 9th, 13th, 2nd, 7th for outfielders the last four seasons and you have a lot more stability with him...something important with a first (or early second) round pick.

Abreu
Cabrera
Bay

Like you stated, all real equal but I'd go:

Abreu (I'd trust him most since he's done it for awhile now)

Cabrera (great talent but no lineup protection hurts)

Bay (can he duplicate his #'s?)

1) Cabrera - If you're worried about line-up protection, it can't get much worse than what Bay had last year, and he still put up the numbers.

2) Abreu - Consistent, established, great hitters park. Questionable attitude?

3) Bay - I think he will continually repeat his hitting stats, but have said before that he does not have significant upside beyond the numbers he put up in '05. The other variable here is that he has a new manager. I don't know much about Jim Tracy, but with McClendon, Bay had a green light whenever he wanted it...that could change.

I think Bay/Abreu are really interchangeable, and I'd put MCab rather significantly ahead of the other two (plus, he plays third).
