A few reasons :

Addition by subtraction, much like Sosa and Farns before him.

With Murton/Pierre/Jones in the OF, Corey has no position and his value certainly isnt going to go up as a 4th OF/pinch hitter that strikes out at the rate he does. Believe it or not, there was actually still room for his trae value to go down.

The $2.5M he was due can now be part of a contract extension for Lee, Prior, or Zambrano.

There is simply zero chance of him ever succeeding at Wrigley anymore. The way the so-called "fans" booed him mercilessly last year, they wouldnt have waited two weeks until they jumped right back on him this year, if they waited that long.

He still has the tools and ability to be a 30/30 hitter, but I dont think he has the mental makeup to ever fully realize his ability. And certainly not in a Cub jersey. I hope he succeeds in BAL, but I wouldnt bet on it.

Whereas the Cubs were willing to give Patterson away to an AL club, another team in the division would more likely have to pay. Yer 'Stros appear to have been too smart to take the bait.

Perhaps they are hoping, at least w/ Patterson, for another Lou Brock? Brock hit .263, .258 and was rolling along batting .251 in '64 when he was dealt, not quite as pathetic as CPat, then he took off closing out the year at .348 and the rest was history in one of the worst trades of all time... :~( :~( :~(

Nice gamble by the O's. The Cubs didn't have much of a choice IMO. They weren't going to play him after last year and he had next to no trade value.

cracks me up ...

this is not your Daddy's loveable losers ...

I think maybe Dusty Baker and all of that winning has spoiled you guys. I can't believe you all chased a 25 year old Corey out of town after one bad season.

I hope he goes on to win two MVP's .. ;-D

I would say "I can't believe you all chased a 25 year old Corey out of town after one good season. Because he has only had one good season IMO. Still seems premature to give up on a 25 year old with that kind of talent though.

Hendry had to deal Patterson or Dusty would keep running him out there. Cory batted .215 last year and Dusty would have him in the line-up every day.

I don't know ...
that screams one bad season ..
Are you knocking him for what he did at the MLB level at age 22 ?
I don't think that is fair.

I wouldn't say I'm knocking him. It just is what it is. The Cubs rushed him and he responded poorly. In 2003 it looked like he had turned a corner and then he hurt his knee. Since then he has had 2 years of decline. I just see one good year and a lot of struggles. That doesn't mean he can't be a late bloomer and put it all together.

Im pulling for him .. ;-D
Now more than ever
Dusty gave the Cubbies a taste of the good life, and a large majority of thier fans have been irrational ever since.
