I feel stupid

Postby Broncmet724 » Tue Jan 10, 2006 6:02 pm

what year did baseball begin the 162 game season? I vaguely remember hearing somewhere in the 50s or 60s, and for some reason I want to think 1954 but I'm pretty sure I am wrong. Any help would be appreciated

Did some more research and it began in 1961.

Yup.

In 1959, the Yankees were 79-75. 154 games.
In 1960, they were 97-57. 154 games.
In 1961, they were 109-53. 162 games.

I don't think it's stupid at all to not know that, off the top of your head. It was a pretty long time ago...

Did you make a typo, or did the number of games go back down in 1969?

Yep...1961 was the year. I rember in the HBO movie *61 they were talking about how Roger Maris would have the asterisk by his record because of the "new" 162 game schedule.

Great movie by the way... ;-D
