Rotoworld's Matt Lawrence: Dumbest Fantasy Writer Ever?

Postby GotowarMissAgnes » Sun Apr 23, 2006 7:50 pm

There's a lot of bad fantasy writers out there, but this guy gets my nomination for the worst ever. I've written him before to point out really obvious errors in his articles, but his latest article just cracks me up.

Check out his "Week Ahead" Stadium Info.

Yes, that's right. He's basing park factors on data for the first three weeks of April.

Yeah, right, Matt. Fenway and U.S. Cellular are great pitching parks!

I don't think he's THAT bad, but I do find that stadium info to be totally useless even if it was based on more significant data. It's a total data dump that I can't see anyone even using. We all know what the hitters and pitchers parks are, and there are less than a few that I'll make adjustments for - mainly Colorado.

Ya I don't see the point in using the park factors of only the first three weeks. I do like the chance of rain thing, although I will probably end up disregarding it.

I hear Funston doesn't like competition. This guy better watch his back and keep a shotgun under his pillow.

While that is dumb, this man is no Brandon Funston. The fact that he is getting paid to do mock drafts by himself makes me furious.

Well that's just like, your opinion man.

The problem with all these guys is they base their "expert" opinions nearly entirely on recent top-line numbers (BA, ERA, etc.) without any regard to underlying skill sets or other factors. For example, a hot hitter or hot pitcher will rocket up Funstons "Big Board" or get glowing reviews on rotoworld even if the hotness is based totally on statistical outliers like 60 percent hit rates.

Shandler and Rotoguys seem at least to look below the surface and try to normalize for luck, statistical outliers, etc. THAT'S the sort of expert advice that's worth something. Like duh, I can take a 10 second look at the stats and know Shelton and Gomes have been red hot, but the real question is whether that hot streak is supported by underlying skills or just a pure streak of luck.
I am the Master. Don't question the Master. Just do what he says and be proud.

Gleeman does keeper league rankings based on a 10 year horizon...that is dumber than Funston.

He left Matt Cain off the two start pitchers list. :-? Decent too. At home against the Mets, and at home against the DBacks.

I won't even get into the park things. 8-o
