Patterson to miss next start

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nationals right-hander John Patterson will miss his next scheduled start because of a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm.

He'll take three to five days off and not throw at all, team doctor Bruce Thomas said Tuesday night. Thomas said Patterson's type of problem usually is solved with rest. Elbow and shoulder injuries were ruled out.

Patterson originally was slated to start the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, then was going to be pushed back a day until Thursday. Ramon Ortiz will start Wednesday. The Nationals didn't immediately announce who will replace Patterson on Thursday at St. Louis.

WASHINGTON--Right-hander John Patterson has pitched through pain in his right forearm all season, but his next start will be pushed back until Thursday due to the nagging injury.

Patterson was scheduled to start tomorrow against the Cincinnati Reds but he will be replaced by right-hander Ramon Ortiz, whose start was skipped because of Saturday's rainout.

"It just tightens up and at this point in the season we are trying to give it some time, get some medicine in it, get some treatment on it and see if I can get my feet on the ground with it and get it to calm down a little bit," Patterson said. "It's a little too early to be pushing on it too hard."

Patterson's start last week was also pushed back a day, but he said he didn't anticipate spending any time on the disabled list, insisting that he was approached by the team to move back his start as a cautionary move.

"We decided the best thing to do for him rather than push the issue a little bit is give him an extra day to see how he feels," manager Frank Robinson said.

Patterson has been one of the Nationals best starters this season, going 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. He has allowed four runs in his last two starts while striking out 21 batters.

But he has reported pain in his forearm since the very end of spring training, specifically when he throws his slider.

"It's just lingering and there are days when it's OK and there are days when it's not," Patterson said. "I think the weather is having some affect on it. When it's warmer it's fine. When it's cold and it's damp like it was the other night, it just tightens up."

Uh oh, I'd be worried if I owned him. Patterson does have a nice little injury riddled past ... :-o
