Crosby's Problem: Not Hitting Breaking Balls

Postby d18Mike » Tue May 30, 2006 12:25 pm

This from Rotoworld: Manager Ken Macha said Friday that Bobby Crosby's struggles are due to his inability to consistently hit breaking balls.

I thought this was an interesting statement:

1) As a manager, why throw a key player's weakness into the spotlight? OK, I'm sure most scouts and pitchers know this, but for those who may not have seen the memo it's an interesting/useful piece of information.

2) Does anyone know if this is a chronic problem with Crosby or just an issue him not seeing the ball well right now. If they are just finding out he can't hit breaking balls, that fundamentally changes things.[/quote]

This is really not a secret. I've only seen about 3 Oakland games this year, and I knew it after watching the first one. In fact, Kevin Millwood made him look absolutely stupid on a few different occasions with low breaking balls.

I dropped him, I might regret it but his lack of production was really killing me. Obviously in a keeper you have to stick with him. But it's getting to the point where instead of getting better, he seems to be getting worse. :-o

Maybe he just needs some red contact lenses. That and follow the advice of the Allstate guy.
Let's go O's. Let's go Mets.

I find the Fanball article interesting, but it's an almost statistically insignificant sample size I'm always wary of those "hot month" analyses unless their is a sustained track record. Here, BTW, is the full article on Crosby's slump.

Guess the KC pitching staff didn't get the memo and forgot to throw him breaking balls tonight.

The fax machine in KC must be broken, because they haven't been getting those memos all year. ;-7
