What's the best way to raise ERA?

My starters have been getting HAMMERED lately, thanks largely to Mulder, Lidge and Contreras, and I am dead last in ERA. Is it better to start some middle relievers who have low ERA rather than a fringe starter with a questionable matchup? I traded for Kazmir, so my rotation is:

Kazmir
Contreras
Josh Johnson
Zito
Chris Young

should I run with that?

Thanks!

16 team, 40 player keeper league, roto style 6x5

C-Victor Martinez, AJ Pierzinski
1B-Tracy
2B-Cantu, Freel
SS-Reyes, Eckstein
3B-Ensberg
OF-Crisp, Podsednick, Hawpe, Floyd, G. Anderson, Burrell, Nady,Gomes
SP-Zito, Kazmir, Doug Davis, Contreras, Zach Duke, Chris Young, Josh Johnson, Backe, Jeremy Sowers, Casey Janssen, Mike O'Connor, Mike Thompson, Mulder, Nolasco, S. Marshall

RP-Lidge, Fuentes, Gordon, MacDougal, Wheeler, E. Gonzalez, Linebrink, Meadows, Wheeler.

Your top 5 sp are fine. I have a question. Who did you draft in your first round?

Pujols

then I traded him for Reyes and Berkman

then I traded Berkman for Kazmir and Ensberg.

I like using MR to lower my ERA/WHIP.
It's a gradual process, but it has worked for me.

Look for guys like Shields, Linebrink, Zumaya, Timlin, etc.

yeah, run with those 5 starters, though i think josh johnson will decline eventually and contreras isn't as safe as the other 3 by any means.

forget guys like doug davis, duke, backe, etc etc, unless you need Ks or Ws badly. but i guess in a 16 team league even they would be usable. i still don't think duke would be usable though. he won't get Ws on the pirates, and he doesn't K much either. at least mulder would get some Ws.

2 top middle relief guys can basically almost equal a top starter in daily roto leagues. you can't do that in weekley h2h since it takes up 2 slots in the starting rotation, but in roto it doesn't matter since you go by IP limit instead. you might not be able to have a deep bench for hitters, but it's worth it.

zumaya + soriano = 80 IP, 5 W, 3 SV (bonus), 95 K, ~2.10 era, ~1.04 whip

in comparson,

peavy = 113 IP, 6 W, 0 SV, 112 K, 2.95 era, 1.24 whip

not bad eh?

i'd imagine, even in a 16 team league, there would be some solid K and era middle relief pitchers available on FA, unless there are several other managers who are using that strategy.

Don't you mean lower ERA? You want low ERA because it's EARNED run average. The higher means more runs scored by the other team your pitcher is facing.

Yes, get mid relievers such as Shields, Timlin, Zumaya, Soriano (Seattle), Linebrink, etc. They'll help you with ERA/WHIP and some give you K's along with some wins now and then.

Ive been using Shields and Zumaya all year and am second in ERA and WHIP and first in Ks. This is a great strategy for roto.

Here's a good (but incomplete) list off the top of my head for the MR's

Shields
Soriano
Betancourt (might want to wait a bit here...he'll turn it around but he's been hammered lately)
Linebrink
Rincon
Accardo (see the Betancourt note ;) - also might be owned since Benetiz is a gimp)
Duchscherer
Calero
Zumaya
Sanchez (if he gets back on track)
Heilman (see Sanchez note)
Bradford (won't give you a ton of k's but he's been money lately and with his style when he's on he's on)
Rodney (check his recent performance to see if he's straightened himself out)
Wainright (another guy struggling lately but very talented)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'd say Shields, Soriano, Linebrink, Rincon, Zumaya, Betancourt and Duchscherer in that order would be my top guys right now. If you need k/ip (or k's in a limited ip league) then I would bump Zumaya to 3rd on that list.
