Kent Mercker.

Aug 27

Braves placed RHP John Smoltz on the 15-day disabled list with elbow tendinitis.
The Braves did a good job of keeping Smoltz's elbow problems quiet, but it was clear something was wrong when he wasn't used at all against the Giants last week. The plan is for Smoltz to completely rest for seven days and then resume throwing with an eye toward returning on Sept. 7. ''I want to pitch in the postseason at my best,'' Smoltz said. ''If this was a four-game lead, I wouldn't be doing this. This is a luxury thing.'' Kent Mercker is probably the favorite for saves while Smoltz is out. Ray King and Kevin Gryboski are also possibilities, but Mercker is the one to own.

-Rotoworld

He could be worth a shot, since the Braves win many games.

Update: Mercker picked up the save today against the Mets, striking out one, although he gave up a hit and a walk. His ERA this year is around 2.25, but he's got a WHIP of 1.49. So, pick him up if you need some saves, but don't be surprised if you take a hit in WHIP.

Yep, Merker got his first save tonight. It's only temporary, but if you are desperate, he's worth a shot.

question, I currently have lecroy and loduca. no other hitters can be cut. I also have cormier and donnelly as my rp, with beck, guradardo and kim all playing. should I cut loduca, cormier or donnelly. I may have an outside shot of making up one spt insaves. I am 16 behind, th eother guy has lance carter, mike williams, mesa and spier. should I pick up mercker and try and make up ground? I am thinking I should...

If your league doesn't count holds, then I'd drop Cormier and Donnelly. Pick up people who will be more productive. Like Merker.
