Abreu a liability in the field???????

Postby Gold Rush » Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:47 pm

I want to see what everybody else thinks about Abreu as a fielder. I personally think he is great in the field, because he has all the tools. He's got speed, a strong and accurate arm, and he is coming off a Gold Glove winning year.

But I've been hearing a bunch of crap about him being lazy in the field and that he doesn't make any plays. I've only heard 2 people say this, but they really wanted me to post something at the Cafe to prove that they are right.

Of course, one is a big anti-yankee "fan", and the other thinks that Derek Jeter isn't one of the best defenders in the league, and is just an average fielder.

Just want to see some opinions about Abreu as a fielder...

He's not chronically lazy, but it really does seem like he's dogging it a good amount of time. Maybe he's just getting old...he's a Venezuelan 32.

He's certainly much much worse than that gold glove that was magically awarded to him last year would have you believe, I say magically because it had zero basis in the realm of reality.
Let's go O's. Let's go Mets.

I'm as big a Yankee fan as you'll find.

Jeter is an average at best fielder, and Abreu is not a very good fielder.

He wont run into a wall for you and he wont be diving for any low liners. He does have a good arm, and gets to a fair number of balls. The negafans in Philly couldn't stand him because he doesnt look like he's moving fast, and they like looks more then production, so you will hear some "he sucks" claims.

IMO he's adequate, but he didn't deserve the gold glove.

Well, now that he's a Yankee, of course he's a liability in the field. How could he be any different? ;-7

Abreu was one of the lowest ranked defensive right fielders in baseball last year. The fact that he won a gold glove is a joke.

Complaints that I've heard is that he's allergic to the wall and won't go back for a ball. Other than that, fairly good arm and not really a liability, but not a gold glover. Bowa said he had no business winning a gold glove.

It had nothing to do with speed, and all to do with his tentative nature when approaching any ball not hit directly at him.

The gold glove was a joke. He doesn't receive many errors because he only goes after balls he will definitely catch.

He is mediocre at best. Perhaps playing meaningful games will spark him.

First off, Jeter makes the hard plays look ridiculously easy, and the easy plays extremely routine, he is one of the best, if not the best defensive SS in the game. I watch the Yankees every day, I would know

And, last I checked, they don't just hand out Gold Gloves to anybody(especially a "liability"), I'm thinking that Abreu had to do SOMETHING to deserve this award

He would be a good fielder but I've seen him blow a LOT of easy plays. He doesnt consistently make all the plays he should make.
