Javy Lopez to Red Sox

Postby Havok1517 » Thu Aug 03, 2006 5:54 pm

According to ESPN Radio in Boston, the Red Sox have acquired Javy Lopez from the Orioles.

Ken Huckaby's stay in Boston will be a short one. Lopez could share time pretty evenly with Doug Mirabelli initially. It's a better situation than he was in as an Oriole, but it still might not leave him with a great deal of fantasy value. Once Jason Varitek returns, he might cease being an option in fantasy leagues.

Did he clear waivers already? How did they get him?

reportedly it was for a low-level prospect in exchange for Boston paying the rest of his contract.

Apparently, he's expected to clear this afternoon. As he walks after this year, my guess is that the O's weren't going to go to Arb (too risky for a 35yo catcher with a good career behind him) so just wanted to dump the salary.

I think this could be a great pickup for the Red Sox.

I don't like his defense at all but he still has a pretty decent bat. Better than Mirabelli or Huckaby anyway.

If all they gave up was a low level prospect I'm ok with it.

Now just wait until Roger clears and comes back home. THEN I'll be excited ;-7

Until/if Lopez returns to form I think Martin is the safer play.

He should play regulary with the Sox, I heard on the Yankees board it was Abe Alvarez.

I like it, personally I think some games at catching will get him back in some type of groove.
