I was trying to say I'm not gonna argue with you about Livan's 138 pitches anymore. It's still a lot though!

My final comment on this thread.... ;-)

From the "Did you know? section.

Did you know that Woddy Williams leads the majors in pitches per start?

True.

I bet the old time pitchers are in heaven laughing at how we complain about today's pitchers and the number of pitches they throw. Not one of them could have pitched even 25 years ago.

Livan was the poster boy for abuse 98-01. In 98 he was at 119.1 per start. His career is 110.1. I did only a quick check, but Livans career could be tops, or very close. Of guys i checked, Prior was 2nd at 110.0.

About a month ago Woody was leading. I just pulled up ESPN sortables, and Woody was at 110.8. Prior was at 112.1.

None of them could have pitched 25 years ago? I would bet most of them could. 25 years ago scoring wasnt close to now. 9 inning games average 150 innings now. 9 innings then wasnt close to 150 innings, most likely 125-130 range. Late 60s was at 115 a game, and scoring increased in 69 with lower mound. Also the guys of 25-30 years ago were much more likely to be golfing after 30, compared to todays pitchers.
