Does anyone tracking this closely have any insights? Is Kotchman still looking to be close to a lock?

With Rivera injured I'd assume both make the team and get heavy playtime until he's back. But I haven't followed it that closely.

I believe Rivera broke his leg and is out for the first part of the season.

Rotowire has an LA Times report saying that the loser of the Kotchman/Morales battle will be in AAA to start the season.

This is too close to call. Morales has looked great so far this spring, and he had a great winter ball season. Kotchman probably has the leg up so far this spring, but that is not concrete. Even if Kotchman starts the season at first base, if he falters, Scioscia will not hesitate to put Morales, Quinlan, or Hillenbrand at first base. Heck, last year he even moved Howie Kendrick to first base. As for me, I like Morales in the long term. It is kind of strange because Quinlan has shown the knack to be a really good big league hitter, but his defense is holding him back, even as a first baseman. If Quinlan could play a lick of defense I think he would be a lock as the first baseman for the Angels.

Quinlan doesn't have the power to be a legit 1B. Quinlan is nothing more than a bench player.

I too like Morales and think he will be the Angels 1B by the end of the year if not out of the gate. Scioscia is weird when it comes to his personnel decision making. I love his in-game decision making, but he seems to be loyal to random guys and I get the feeling he is that way with Kotchman.
