Dontrelle Willis, playing in the field? (other than P)

Postby SpecialFNK » Sun Apr 22, 2007 10:26 am

apparently Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez told Willis he might be needed in the field.
With the Marlins dealing with several injuries, Dontrelle Willis was told by manager Fredi Gonzalez that there was a chance he'd be needed to play the field.
"He was ready," said Gonzalez. "You know him. He's probably hoping somebody breaks a leg. He's probably going, 'Somebody pull a [hamstring]. I want to go in.' " Willis is a career .219 hitter with six home runs.

where would he play? LF? and is that wise? i highly doubt that the Marlins should be playing their ace somewhere in the field.

That would be a really stupid decision. His value is as a pitcher and for them to even think about risking an injury as a marginal player on the field is just beyond me.

Gonzalez might want to call his former boss, Mr. Bobby Cox and ask him if that is a wise decision to make. :-o

What would happen fantasy wise if he gained multiple position eligibility? I think Yahoo! would have a mess on their hands.

What's the context of the quote? Is it possible that Gonzalez was talking about needing him in an individual game, because of injuries and substitutions?

He can't possibly mean Willis would play the field on a regular basis.

They just meant it as if the Marlins are put in a bind because of the recent flood of injuries, that he may be called upon to play the field. By no means did they mean daily, but that in an extreme situation he may be needed. They would call someone up before they made him a regular.

OK I know this is totally unrealistic but how awesome would it be if D-Train became an above average LF who takes a game off every week to pitch 8 innings.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

I highly doubt Willis will be worthy of a roster spot on someone's fantasy team.
