Friendly Reminder @ Ramon Ortiz

For those of you looking at Ramon Ortiz thinking, "Maybe I'll give him a shot," I just want you to know that you are playing with fire. This guy is the picture of a luck-induced hot streak.

His current BABIP is 100 points below the league average, and his strand rate is hovering near a ridiculous 90%. To top it all off, he's striking out even less batters than ever before in his career.

You don't want to have this guy on your team when his numbers come back to earth.

That is all. Back to your waiver wire now. ;-D

Good stuff... where do you get the stats?

His numbers aren't going to be like this, but you also need to take into account that the Twins get pitchers like him to put the ball over the plate, and they succeed because they put a good defense behind them. It's the opposite Oakland strategy- instead of taking walks, they don't give them up, and the past has proven it works. Balls go over the fence, but they win the division and the pitchers normally have decent stats.

Maybe Ortiz will revert to normal and finish with bad stats but I think it will be somewhere in the middle of where he is now and where he's been the past few years.

"I feel great. I feel very good. When you have a great pitching coach like Andy, he worked me hard in spring training," Ortiz said. "Look at me now. I'm different now." -- Ramon Ortiz

Changed man? Did he go to the Jedi Academy or something? Unless he's figured out how to use the Force to control the ball once it's hit, I doubt much he's learned has impact his current numbers. The only thing going for him right now is that he's not walking nearly as many guys as he used to, and I'm sure that will change when some of these grounders start finding the empty holes.

You can't mess with the averages. These numbers will regress:

And to answer the earlier question, those are from FanGraphs.com - the greatest non-Cafe site in the world. ;-D

Of coarse his numbers will regress. As will all of the other pitchers that have had hot starts, i just think he is going to be solid this year, and worth owning. In all leagues.

Thanks JT, nice heads up. That fan graphs site is excellent. By the same reasoning, Greinke may well be a very good buy low candidate:

Greinke's BABIP
