Whats the deal with this guy? Is his start a trend or is he a good buy low guy? Are last years innings catching up to him now?

1st 2 years as a starter he had ~140 IP per year
2006 he goes for 196.

That's what happens when you have a career WHIP over 1.4...

mind explaining to us why he's improved that 1.44 career whip from years:

04 = 1.60
05 = 1.38
06 = 1.35

oh and lets look at all the numbers

ERA from 4.59-4.00-3.76

K's 121-125-171

he's a great buy low right now. and he K's in masses

K/BB ratio is at all time best over 3. Career it's 2.15.

Prior to today's game,
Groundball % at 50.7%. Career it's 43.4%
Line drive% at 19.4%. Career it's 21.2%
HR/FB rate at 20%. Career it's 8.1%.
BABIP is at .361. Career it's .327. Statistically it should be .290.

All in all, he's pitching great. Better than last year.

I've watched a few of his starts, I definitely don't think he has a serious problem. He's just getting hit hard for some reason. If anything, he looks like he's peaking in terms of pure stuff--his fastball regularly hits 96, whereas in previous years I remembered it was generally 90-92.

He's not stranding anyone and he's given up a lot more HR's than he normally will. Overall he's pitched better this year than last year.

Pitching is just wierd like that, for example Cain has pitched worse than last year and has a 1.24 ERA, he's just had a ton of hits right at guys.

Didn't Bedard start slow last year also? Maybe he's unlucky, but maybe he also heats up with the weather ;)

I think he'll be ok. Buy low.

I think Bedard is overrated. Too inconsistent in too many ways. I know there are stats and empirical evidence showing he is pretty good, but my personal impression of him and the division he plays in lead me to believe otherwise. Plus PECOTA puts him at about 1.39 whip/4.32 era. I don't want a guy on my team who I have to almost always bench versus three of his division rivals.
