yeah, as it has already been said, the "save" category wasnt created that long ago. And even then, teams didn't use their closers like teams do today when tony la russa started reforming baseball. before that, closers were used in the most important position in the game, not just save situations.

also, like i said before, its about endurance. its so hard to play 162 games with very limited breaks in between. hoffman only pitches or plays in about 50 innings per year. thats only about a weeks worth for guys like biggio and thomas.

and again, the only reason im choosing thomas is due to his injury problems. he has had them so many times and still, he reaches this milestone. thats pretty impressive.
Is pushing for President Obama to pass a law requiring all citizens to be Chicago White Sox fans and make October 1st "White Sox Day" where we all dress as our favorite player. It maybe socialist, but I don't care.

I'm not big on closers or saves, but Hoffman is one of the execptions. With a peak better then Riveras, and being very good late in his career, i probably go

Saves are stupid.

How many times has Hoffman came in with a 3 run lead and gets the 7-8-9 hitters out... real impressive. Even after saying that it's better than the 500 HR.

Biggio
Hoffman
Thomas

Everyone bags on the 500 hr accomplishment and saying it won't mean a thing in a decade but look at all the players who may eventually get there......

Thomas - just did, future HOFer
Thome - depends on how many more years he can go, might be a HOFer
Manny - future HOFer
ARod - future HOFer
Sheffield - future HOFer
Piazza - future HOFer
Delgado - needs a few more years but has a chance at the HOF
Andruw Jones - probably HOFer when all is said and done
Vlad - future HOFer

......my point is that everyone that is reaching this point are HOF type players, they aren't scrubs. I think 500 hr will stay impressive until we get a number of scrub players reaching the mark.

i say hoffman because you really have to be close to the top of your game to be a succesful closer and hoffman has. players can just hang on forever and play mediocore baseball to rack up hits and homers.

I'm going to go with Hoffman because he's done it without the protypical skill set for that position. Thomas and Biggio have both accomplished exactly what you would expect of their skill set.

Hoffman's prolonged his career with that changeup of his, while all other closers typically rely on speed, speed, and more speed.
