Can Someone Explain How This Happened?

Postby tianyi86 » Mon Sep 10, 2007 4:52 pm

I'm playing in a custom league with friends. Its a 15 cat league and on Sunday morning, I was up 9 to 3 in my matchup. I ended the day with a split of 7 to 7, with 1 tied category.

Somehow, the other team went to the semifinals while I'm stuck in the 5th place game.

I ended the season 3rd seed, with 177-100-30 record, other team ended the season 6th seed, 135-132-33.

When I faced this team, I beat him 10-3, and 7-5. I thought playoff tiebreaks was first based on your record against the team u tied with, or am I missing something?

Typically H2H leagues use ERA as the tiebreaker in a situation like that. Having 15 cats, I'd check your league rules and see what the tiebreaker is/was, but it's normally ERA.

Usually it is. Double check your league rules just to be sure though, because I base it off what most leagues use and Yahoo's default is ERA as well, but those are 10 cat leagues, not 15. I'd hate for you to find out later that it really was a mistake on someone else's end and then be mad at me !+) , so verify that it's that way for your league. ;-D

Yeah, I'm not a fan of their tiebreaker system. Seems arbitrary to me.

I think they just picked the stat that the two teams are the least likely to be tied in.

It sucks, but I can see where they're coming from on a mass scale.

How are ties broken in a playoff game?

In the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock will be broken using the following system:

(See below if your league does not use one or more of the following categories.)

1. Lowest team ERA.
2. Highest team AVG.
3. Lowest team WHIP.
4. Most team HR.
5. Most team wins.
6. Most team RBI.
7. Most team saves.
8. Most team runs.
9. Most team SO.
10. Most team SB.
11. Random "coin flip."

Notes:

* The first category above that is not tied will settle the tiebreaker. So, tiebreaker No. 2, team AVG., will be used only if team ERA is tied.
* In a Custom League, the same tiebreakers apply. If a category above is not used in your league, please skip it and move on to the next criteria. So, if your league does not use ERA, then the first scoring category used to settle the tie will be team AVG.
