Report: Twins GM Ryan out after 12 years on job

MINNEAPOLIS -- Terry Ryan's tenure as general manager of the Minnesota Twins is coming to an end.

The 52-year-old Ryan will step down after 12 seasons. The Minneapolis Star Tribune, citing three unnamed sources with the team, first reported the story on its Web site. The Twins have called a news conference for Thursday afternoon to announce a "major" reorganization of their baseball operations.

Team spokesman Mike Herman wouldn't discuss details when reached by The Associated Press.

Longtime assistant GM Bill Smith will succeed Ryan, the Star Tribune reported. Smith has been club vice president/assistant GM for the last 13 of his 22 seasons with the organization.

The Twins won the AL Central title last season -- their fourth division crown in the last six years -- but they are currently 72-74 and out of the playoff chase.

Ryan has long been highly regarded throughout baseball for his work in crafting a contender with a limited payroll. The Twins have received several awards for Organization of the Year this decade, but Ryan began to take some heat this year for the signings of some unproductive veterans and failures to lock up some of the team's stars to long-term contracts.

Wow I think this is a big blow for the Twins. He's developed a lot of good players and built a contending team for many years with a limited budget.

This hurts. Ryan was among the best GM's in the league and was a big part of the Twins recent success. Good thing is an assistant is taking over, but this is still a blow to the Twins organization. 8-o

Surprising, I didn't see this coming.

How about Toronto?

JP seems to be content with treading water here, the evidence being his John McDonald signing of a few days ago.

Yikes, Twins might be looking at a few down years ahead. Looks like Santana will be gone after next year and now without Ryan to re-bolster that team... :-/

Yes it is. Ryan must have been eroded from constantly having to make ends meet under that parsimonious old toad Pohlad. He did incredibly well given the limitations the old tightwad set.

He's going to stay on as a senior advisor. He might be able to work a little bit better without the criticism that has been directed towards him over the last year.

That's good news. Better than not having him at all.

New Twins GM Bill Smith walks into a tough job. The organization has resurged these past 7 years and become meaningful on the MLB landscape again. Now the team will likely lose Hunter, Santana, and possibly Cuddyer within the next couple seasons. He's got some hard work ahead of him.
