Gettin' it Done... W/O 1st Rd. #'s

Postby RobRob27 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:49 am

So... I've got MCab (bitter) and his numbers at this point aren't as good as Logoria's (who has 40 fewer at bats), and I came to the realization that there is not player on my team putting up legit 1st round numbers for next year. I was lucky to pick up Quentin early, and my pitching is pulling me through, but I'm in third place waiting for the peloton to pull me back in. Anyone else succeeding without a big producer? After Quentin, I've got Hart and RMart. (13 team 5x5 redraft).

Is that a cycling term?

My first pick this year was Santana, and he hasn't got red hot yet.
I've got my "1st round numbers" out of Kinsler.

If you're aware enough you can get temporary "1st round numbers" from waivers all the time.
Current Example: Elijah Dukes.

The peloton (from French, literally meaning ball and related to the English word platoon), field, bunch or pack is the large main group in a road bicycle race. Riders in a group save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstreaming) near (particularly behind) other riders. The reduction in drag is dramatic; in the middle of a well-developed group it can be as much as 40%.[1]

More loosely, "the peloton" can also refer to professional cyclists in general: "LeMond joined the European peloton at a time when few Americans could."

I'm going to agree with the Aussie on this one. There are always examples of players out performing their draft position and putting up early round numbers for an extended period of time. You just have to recognize which ones to pick up.

Thanks, OldStyle. I thought it had something to do with bikes, but because of the misspell I got nothing on dictionary.com...

Anyhew, it's definitely not a problem to have no 1st round production. In our auction, I tend to shy away from first round guys due to price and end up with a team full of 5th and 6th rounders.

The bottom line is, you need good production from your whole team, not elite production from 1 or 2 of them...

I've suddenly assumed a commanding lead in my Roto league, and for the life of me I can't figure out how. Three of my top four choices were Cabrera, Ortiz, and Verlander -- not a lot of help there. I did get great production early from McLouth and Furcal, and consistent great production from Kinsler. I guess, like the man said, the key is good value throughout the roster.

That's pretty impressive. I'm in first in my league, but I'm loaded w/ players putting up first rd #'s.
10 man league, so in the top 10, I have 3 players: Hamilton, Uggla, Chipper. In the top 40 I have 9 players (roughly half my team) w/ Crawford (44) and Kazmir (52) just missing the cut.

Josh Hamilton (5)
D. Uggla (6)
C. Jones (8)
J. Reyes (12)
R. Halladay (13)
E. Volquez (17)
J. Duchscherer (21)
D.Lee (22)
C. Lee (31)

c: G. Soto
1b: D. Lee
2b: Uggla
3b: Chipper
ss: J. Reyes
Of: Crawford, C. Lee, Hamilton
Util: V. Wells
Bench: C.Granderson, M. Lowell

SP: Kazmir, Volquez, Dice-K, Zambrano, Halladay, Duchscherer, Oswalt, Cain, McGowan, Jurrjens
RP: Sherrill
DL: Carmona

I feel that my team has several "good" producers, but at the current time only Quentin could be considered a great producer, and it's simply void of "elite" players. I've found in the past that it's beneficial and almost necessary to have those couple offensive players that produce suprisingly above their value, and I just don't have that, but I'm still in contention. My first four picks were MCab, Vlad, RMart, and Bedard.
