What to make of Manny Parra?

Postby Inukchuk » Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:00 pm

Now that he's won 7 straight, I'd like to get some input (particularly from those who have watched him pitch) as to what he can do. I've flirted with picking him up for a while now, but the walks are pretty awful.

I understand he was a highly touted guy with an injury history, but his minor league career was pretty disjointed (and impressive, but not overly so), making it difficult to predict what he's capable of.

What are your opinions on what he can do in the second half of the season?

I'm a buyer. Decent stuff and minor league career record and he's on a pretty good offensive team. ;-D

One reason to buy is that his BABIP is extremely high at .340. His LOB% is just a tad high, which may somewhat explain why he's been able to keep his ERA down despite his incredibly high BB rate and his poor WHIP. But as his BABIP corrects itself, his WHIP should go down. If he can only get his BB rate down (not inconceivable considering he didn't have huge control problems in the minors), he'll be a must own. As of now, I think he's certainly worth owning but expectations must be tempered.

so Parra threw one inning in relief today, and it wasnt an extra inning game.
Is he out of the rotation because of Sabbathia?

he has been awesome, why would they do that?

They pushed his start back a few days and wanted him to get some work in before hand. He starts on Friday, I believe. No worries ;-D

No way he's out of the rotation, especially now that Suppan's headed to the DL. He was just getting some work in since his start was getting pushed back. He's been too good, and at this point is clearly this team's #3 SP.

as a parra owner i also screamed "noooooo! look what a stupid relief stint did to harang!" but parra was supposed ot get work in on monday anyway and they figured the game was lost (even tho only 4-0) so they got him his work.
