Swarmee's SimDraft versus the CBS experts

Postby swarmee » Fri Mar 12, 2004 11:41 am

So I wanted to give myself a shot to compete against the "experts" at CBS, so I decided to SimDraft against them, giving myself the 15th pick in the draft. I think I've assembled a pretty solid team. Anybody else want to give it a try?

I'm simulating being in the draft, by selecting as if I was the team with the 15th overall pick.

Man you ain't kidding about Nancy. For an expert draft, those are some pretty horrible picks.

Vlad, Posada, Zito, Pettitte, Furcal, Castillo, Edmonds, Zambrano, B. Williams, Koskie, Stewart, Willis, T. Lee, Nen, Jenkins, Catalanotto, Graves, Mientkewicz, C. Guillen, Larry Bigbie (who?), Hentgen, Dye, S. Reynolds, O. Hernandez, K. Garcia, R. Simon, M. McLemore, T. Gordon.

Bah. Even the first few picks, which look more solid, are pretty bad. Vlad, while Pujols was still available is kinda week. Posada is the #1 catcher, but 2nd round is too early, even in a 14-team league. Zito before Hudson and Moose, Pettitte in the 4th freakin' round, Furcal way too early. Drafting Bernie Williams and Karim Garcia at all. Hentgen, Dye, Reynolds??? Ugh. It hurts, it hurts.

I feel your pain. I had restrain myself from poking my eyes out with a dull chopstick.

Anyway, swarmee, did you just pick the rest of the teams based on the order of the original picks then?

It's an easy concept. "Pretend" that you're also in the league. That would make 15 teams. So since we know how the first 14 teams have drafted their first round player, we can insert ourself into the 15th draft slot, so as to not give my team an advantage (in fact, a small disadvantage). Then with the 15th and 16th selections, make picks out of the best remaining talent that you can't get later in the draft, i.e., two guys between round 2 and round 3. Then the next pick for the 15th overall drafter would be the 15th in the 3rd round. So grab two guys drafted between the 4th and 5th rounds, etc.
That way you're simulating as if you were actually in the league when they were drafting, because you're making the same decisions the drafters were. Now I realize that my choices would make other experts choose other players, and that maybe some of my later choices wouldn't be there when I wanted them, but it's much tougher to go back and ask which guy they would have taken.

One good thing to think about it this: See BH Kim way in the late rounds? Now you know you can wait til the round before he got drafted to pick him up. So use earlier picks on guys that go earlier, rather than taking Kim 5 picks earlier than you have to.

But for a basic SimDraft, that's the concept. It's not a mock, since I don't have 13 people drafting with me at the same time.

Interesting concept and it would be fun to watch how you'd fare in through the season.

I think, however, that 'peeking ahead' and changing your sim choice is inconsistent with what you're trying to accomplish. I think that you should make your picks in good faith as if you didn't know any later picks. In other words, I think you should grab Kim where you would if you had no idea where the others intend to get him.

All in all, though, I think you're fielding a competitive team.
Blessed are the cheesemakers.
