Strasburg in Keeper Leagues

Postby nacho742 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:21 am

What does the cafe think about Strasburg's value and draft position in keeper leagues?

Trusty MDP has him at 244, but that is presumably for redraft leagues.

For the sake of comparison -- in my 16 team keeper league Wieters went with the #2 overall pick (82nd overall) and the next rookie taken was Hanson at 206.

Last year Wieters was the clear cut #1 MLB-ready rookie that would make an impact in '09 -- is that the case with Strasburg this year? Everything I hear and see from Jason Heyward indicates he'll be up with the big club by the All Star break at the VERY latest. Desmond Jennings, Matsuz....anyone else i'm missing?

As far as guys with no MLB time, Pedro Alvarez could likely be up by the break, also Carlos Santana should be ready fairly soon.

Both gargantuan Oakland sluggers (Carter and Taylor) could be good to go in June. ;-D
If they believe that Taylor is ready now, either Sweeney or Rajai will be traded shortly (Crisp can't be until June) and he'll start in LF or RF.
Carter is pretty much guaranteed to have some time in AAA because they want to figure out if he can stick in the OF.

Wieters was available last year (was drafted #2 overall in my keeper league) so he's out of the discussion.

Alvarez is a good addition to the mix. It really seems like its Strasburg, Heyward, Jennings, Alvarez, Matusz with maybe Smoak, Taylor, Alcides Escobar that are the prime candidates to have an impact in 2010?

What is the smart spot to draft these guys?

The smart spot to draft them depends on league settings. you said in your initial post:
For the sake of comparison -- in my 16 team keeper league Wieters went with the #2 overall pick (82nd overall) and the next rookie taken was Hanson at 206.

I think it all depends on how long you can keep a player, how many teams in your league, how many keepers teams can keep.

I like this list

http://www.dobberbaseball.com/index.php ... 6:rankings

me personally for keeper value this year

1-Strasburg
2-Heyward
3-Jennings
4-Posey
5-Matusz
6-Santana
7-Alvarez
8-Smoak
9-Bumgarner
10-Hellickson

If you include Neftali Feliz he's probably 3 or 4.

after keepers wasn't mentioned. Some people buy way too much into the hype, so it wouldn't have been that crazy. After all, Wieters does not slump. He just gives the bleacher seats a few days off.
