The Royals reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Rick Ankiel on a one-year deal worth $3.25 million with a mutual option for 2011 worth $6 million

On one hand they didn't pay the sticker price, which is sensible this year, but I'm pretty sure they're going to play him in CF, which is FAIL (career -9.4 UZR/150).

If he can replicate 2008 with the bat, and they play him in LF or RF, this will be a reasonable signing.

A good flier signing except for one small detail:

DeJesus
Guillen
Pods
Maier
Ankiel
Anderson
and not an option year among them.

Fields and Callaspo will lock up the DH spot unless Getz is sent down or...
There is a trade in the works involving either DeJesus or Callaspo or...
The Royals may just release Guillen and eat $12m since I don't see anyone who would be remotely interested in trading for him even if the Royals ate $8m-$9m of the contract.

Even if the this deal turns out good where you get the 2008 version of Ankiel (which I think there is a decent chance he will be closer to that than he will be to the 2009 version) , I'm not sure I have ever been this confused heading into February about what the 25 man roster will look like coming out of spring training.

Callaspo for Wuertz?
He's never played for Atlanta, but we could just pretend he has. :-B

That's the thing that confused me. The OF and DH spots looked full but then again he should be plenty of AB with Podsednik and Guillen hurting themselves every other week.

Chances are that if they do trade DeJesus or Callaspo it would be for more 0-3 service type players. I wouldn't be too upset though if they moved him for something like Wuertz.

Wouldn't Guillen lock up the DH spot?

Side Note: I am enamored with Billy Butler. A man amongst men. Highly targeted this year by DaSh 1s.

Billy Butler is being targeted by many, a lot of people see him as being the Kendry Morales of this season- except he's already being drafted in the same vacinity as Morales, Berkman and Derrek Lee. He's a talent and one of my favorite players but many people seem to be reaching for him.
