Of all the players in MLB, I can't think of many that would be worse for the Mets than Matthews. Why not just play Pagan, Fmart or sign Tatis? Mets need some SP not an overpaid, mediocre outfielder. :-t

This provides a few interesting opportunities for the Angels. Most likely it's just Rivera/Hunter/Abreu getting full PT in LF/CF/RF, but if they want to sit Rivera occasionally like they did last year, they could try to put Matsui in LF a couple times and bring Napoli to DH. It's a damn shame they signed Matsui in the first place. Napoli at DH every day = 30+ HR. :-L

Anyway, this round goes to Minaya. At least Dayton Moore didn't spend a lot of money on Ankiel. ;-D

The Mets are one of the few teams that make me happy to be a Royals fan.

The Mets have acquired outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. from the Angels, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.
Let's hope they're not giving up much and taking on very little of his remaining salary. Matthews, 35, has hit just .248/.325/.383 since signing a five-year, $50 million contract with the Angels in November of 2006 and had a .697 OPS in 316 at-bats last season. He's also a highly overrated defensive outfielder and is owed $23 million over the next two seasons.

So everyone was thinking "Oh yeah Smoltz or Sheets signing is close" and the "DEAL" was GARY MATTHEWS JNR?

And it just gets (potentially) worse for the Mets...........

Not sure who the Angels are getting back for Matthews, but I was told it's a "low salaried pitcher'' off the big league roster.

Instead of "NOTHING" the Angels are getting something affordable - also the Mets kinda need pitching.

This offseason needed some comic relief.

Is Castillo part of the deal opening a spot for Hudson? Have they included a different untradeable player?

this could work if it was Castillo for Mathews Jr and at least 5M in cash. that would leave the Mets on the hook for about 5M (or less) over 2 years but allow them grab Hudson.
