Thoughts on Sean Rodriguez?

Postby jeremygordon » Fri Mar 26, 2010 2:50 pm

I've been heavily scouting 2B in one of my leagues and started looking at Sean Rodriquez
3% owned in Yahoo leagues
24 years old
Currently only eligible at OF, but possibly at 2B and more.

Spring Training Stats 46Aab .413avg 6hr 14rbi 1sb
AAA numbers from 2008-2009 635ab .298avg 51hr 150rbi 13sb
Major League Stats 2008-2009 192ab .203avg 5hrs 14rbi

ESPN Projections
219abs .242avg 12hr 35rbi

If you increase it to
500abs 27hr 80rbi 9sb

A prediction from ESPNs Mathew Berry
Matt Joyce and Sean Rodriguez combine to hit 40 home runs

and from rotoworld.com
Mar. 22
Rodriguez also collected a single as the Rays' second baseman today. His awesome spring has the team thinking about making him the regular there and pushing Ben Zobrist to right field.

Mar. 16
Rodriguez now has five homers and 11 RBI in just 26 at-bats this spring. Granted, three of those homers came in the first three games of the exhibition schedule, but with the ability to play second base and shortstop, as well as the outfield, the 24-year-old has presented a very strong case to make the Opening Day roster.

What does everyone else think?

In leagues with deep benches, I love this pickup. Very sexy pick, but very sketchy in playing-time right now.

In standard short-bench leagues, I think he's only worth the risk if you've got a bottom-tier 2B you're looking to replace and the rest of your lineup is so rock-solid that you don't need any backups.

I'm predicting that by the end of April he'll either be owned in 80+% of leagues or less than 10%. Tampa is just too stacked with young kids to find enough ABs for all of them.

I know we have a 6 player bench and I plan on grabbing him late. If ST is any indication of his versatility then he could be a great utility player with definite value added late in the draft.

This is my main concern, even if he does break ST with the club... depending on the eligibility that your particular site gives him and how many games it takes to become eligible in others, it could be literally until the end of May until you're able to leverage him effectively at the spot where you need him. If he's only playing three games per week, and getting shuffled from 2B to OF to DH to wherever, it could get quite frustrating waiting for that 5th or 10th or 20th game played at a certain position before you can stop clogging up your UT spot every other day.

Baseball Prospectus has him penciled in as the starting 2b with Zobrist starting in RF.

He's gonna have to hit to keep his spot if the sore elbow of Joyce ever heals, but it looks like he's got a spot (2b) to open the season.

He's just as good of a late round pickup as their is...especially if he's going to re-earn 2B eligibility.

I agree, but ONLY if he gets regular playing time. from what i've read, he should break camp with the team, but more likely as a reserve...meaning who knows how often he's gonna start...

Ctrl+F "Desmond Jennings"

Nothing? No one mentions that once Jennings gets called up, it will be Zobrist, Bartlett, and Rodriguez battling it out for MI?
