I'm confused....

Everyone that works for ESPN is saying that the Red Sox and Yankees is not a rivalry, YET, 30-40% of their baseball coverage is on the Red Sox and Yankees. THERES A REASON FOR THAT! There's a reason Red Sox-Yankee tickets sell for $500 on Ebay.

I understand that the Yankees have kicked the Sox's asses this past century, but there have been so many amazing memories, for Red Sox and Yankee fans. What could be better than the highest paid team vs. the second highest paid team? And, it has to be said, that if the Yankees and Red Sox weren't in the same division, the Red Sox could of had as many pennants as the Yankees by now. Before the wild card, there were so many instances where the Sox had a better record that anyone in the AL, except for the Yankees.

BTW...

ri·val ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rvl)
n.
1. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
2. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect.
3. Obsolete. A companion or an associate in a particular duty.

And how is the Red Sox and Yankees not a rivalry?

the case espn was making is that the redsox have never gotten past the yanks in a lonnnnggggg time. they think it is much more of a rivalry when another team actually beats the other once and a while, something the redsox can't seem to do.

edited to say: yeah yeah, the sox do win some games. but never when it actually matters.

Lol, sorry (couldnt resist)

But seriously...two teams that despise each other, in the same division, that play each other like 20 times per year...if thats not a rivalry, I don't know what is.

Edit: The Sox do beat the Yankees, in the regular season. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that they did in fact win the season series last year. It just seems like the Yankees always win when they need to against them. The Red Sox were pretty damn close to winning the ALCS last year, they outplayed us all series, except for those final outs, and its moments like those that promote the rivalry between the two teams

I would say that Game 7 in the ALCS, would qualify as almost equal. ;-D

If you go by the definition of rivalry then every team the Red Sox play this is a rivalry. Rivalry really isn't the right word to use.

Well I see it as the Sox and Yankees going for the AL East championship, and there is really no one else competing, or hasn't been in recent memory.
