Is Johnson in line for the win?

If they hold on (and with Mantei lurking, there's no guarantee of that), he'll get the win. Does anyone know why he came out after throwing just 78 pitches? Was it a matter of being down 3-0 and needing a pinch-hitter at that spot in the game?
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'

Yes, when the 3 run shot was hit, RJ was in line for the win. :-)

He got it too, and the save from Mantei helped. :-D

It doesn't amke sense to pull him in the 5th for offense; after all, he is Randy Johnson.
I'm a little worried that maybe his knee's acting up...

I wouldn't be worried...in a tight game, when you have the chance to win it then you need to take it. He has pitched some long games already this year, so I think this was their way of giving him some extra rest. If it happens again next time out, then it's time to worry.

Who knows, if Arizona has an off day on Monday then maybe they'll skip the 5th man being that RJ didn't have a long outting.

Hmmm...I didn't know starting pitchers had to pitch five innings to qualify for a win. :-?

Yeah, basically how it works if a starting pitcher is shelled early and pulled, yet his own team did well enough to cover the margin and actually take the lead. So for example, Team A shells Team B's pitcher in the top half of the first, so he's pulled. Yet Team B comes back in the bottom of the first and from then on the game goes scoreless. The win for the game would go to whichever relief pitcher completes the fifth inning for team B I believe.

It's kinda weird how that works, but I've seen it happen a few times.
