African-American Players

Postby Never Iffey » Sun May 09, 2004 10:24 am

My friends and I were talking, can you think of African-American players in baseball that are good? And by "good" I basically mean star-status or players worth mentioning.

I mean Barry Bonds, Griffey Jr. (comin' back), I guess you'd say Michael Young because of the year he is having? But honestly- name a pitcher or even just a major leaguer. It falls off real quick after Bonds.

Just an observation that I thought was pretty surprising.
if it's Griffey...

This is probably going to become a huge arguement.

It is true that there aren't that many great black baseball players today. The main reason to me, is that blacks see so many other blacks playing, excelling, and making a lot of money in basketball and football, that the best black athletes tend to focus on those 2 sports specifically, rather than baseball. In other words, baseball is losing those athletes to other sports.

Its not that they as a race could not be dominant in baseball because of some racial difference; its that they at large, don't play baseball as much as they do basketball and football.

Sheffield, preston wilson, garret anderson, andruw jones, derek lee off the top of my head are all all-star caliber and I am sure there are more if I actually sat down and thought. While its true that the bulk are hispanic or white you mentioned Bonds and Griff who barring injury would have both been top 5 in terms of greatest ever.

Come on.

Garrett Anderson
Bonds
Junior
Vernon Wells
Preston Wilson
Derrick Lee

I was also thinking this and found that 3 of the top 4 HR hitters of all time are African-American in Mays, Bonds and Aaron

And Mike Young is my favorite too, :-D ;-D

I don't want to get involved in this because we don't need to be talking about players through their skin color any longer but, I had to say something about...

MICHAEL YOUNG! Yeah, because the year he is having I would call him black. I mean, he is obviously blessed with black athletic talent and he's already better than all the white players so suuuuuuuure, we can call him black!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
OH MAN, THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE HEARD ON THE BOARD, EVER!!!!
AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

He made a mistake??? Wow, I didn't notice!
We know he made a mistake, but it's that mistake that is so funny. Also, know that you can't sense sarcasm through a computer screen.

You can point it out, but there's no need to be such an ass about it
