He will be closing sooner than later. Look at his numbers compared to Koch's both this year and last year. There's no comparison. If Koch didn't have a history of being a closer, he'd be the guy they bring in for the 7th inning when his team is down by 7 runs.

Koch:
2002: 3.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 1K/IP; 2Ks/BB
2003: 5.77 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, 0.8K/IP, 1.5Ks/BB
2004: 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 1K/IP, 1.6 K/BB

Marte
2002: 2.83 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 1.2 K/IP, 4Ks/BB
2003: 1.58 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 1.1 K/IP, 2.6 K/BB
2004: 2.63 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 0.7 K/IP, 1.8K/BB

Every measure (except K/IP this year) Marte is better. He'll be the closer as soon as Koch blows 3 in a row. And he will....

well well well, the plot thickens. let me throw you guys a curve ball. guess who's on the waiver now? YUP, Koch.

I sure wouldnt drop Marte. Especially given your roster.
Last yr he was in the same situation - a few save opps throughout the yr combined with incredible K/9, ERA and WHIP - numbers that gave him a higher ranking even though he wasnt a true closer. I expect similar production from him all yr. Its definetly tougher to keep him in H2H leagues, but the fact that he is placed in situations where he could vulture wins and saves makes him really quite valuable.

Given the theory that in H2H you should start a minimum of 4 closers or top setup men like Marte every day, I cant see how you could drop him unless there is another closer on the WW - and if thats the case, Id still would advise you to keep Marte and drop either E. Martinez or Encarnacion for him. Again - strategy in H2H suggests you should be playing at least 4 closers every day, prefferably 5. They get Ks, good %s, and could vulture wins or saves.

I think Takatsu's next in line (he's pitched VERY well. he looks like a one year closer for the team, because he'll probably get figured out by next year. plus, he's not exactly young too)...like the guys above said, Marte is too valuable to be restricted to the 9th inning. He is my favorite baseball player, but I just don't see him closing. That being said, he's on my roster and I didn't drop him for Valverde when I had the chance. :-o So you can say that I'm still holding out hope...

no - do not drop marte for koch. Drop Encarnacion or Edgar for Koch.

Reread my post about playing 4 or 5 closers/setupmen with good %s, K/9 every day.

You need another closer much more than you need a 3rd or 4th offensive bench option - trust me.

Kelly Wunsch - R - White Sox May. 19 - 12:49 am et

White Sox recalled LHP Kelly Wunsch from Triple-A Charlotte.
Wunsch, who had a 2.75 ERA in 36 innings last year, gives the White Sox a true lefty specialist in the pen.

;-D

Okay, this may just be hopeful wishing, but this finally gives them a lefty specialist. If so, if Koch fails, Marte may get the call to close. However, Marte's been like Koch and Koch like Marte recently...so...

I would avoid Takatsu. He was given a contract, and then the White Sox realized that his fastball tops out at 85. He's had good numbers so far this year, but he's been brought in in mop up situations and big leads. If he's made a closer, hitters will take a look at tapes of hime and figure out that he's not too hard to smack around.
