Why is everyone so down on Brandon Webb?

Postby Fender1114 » Tue Jun 01, 2004 4:46 pm

ok, so i get that he has gotten rocked lately, but everyone seems to forget that just 2 starts ago he had an ERA of only 2.95!! his K-rate is also certainly solid. i know he hasnt looked good lately, and he plays on a pretty lousy team and has only 2 wins, but cmon, the guy has still pitched well on the whole this season. yet i cant GIVE him away in my league. does he have NO value anymore??

Webb is one of my favorite pitchers around. Hes got stuff, talent, and confidence. His low W count is due to the poor offensive support/bullpen problems. His ERA, as stated above, just inflated because he had a couple of bad outings. The guy is an ace in making in my opinion, I can only WISH that someone in my league would drop him.
Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!

I agree, even though I do not think that Zito is god. He is a great pitcher, and even the best, look at Maddux, gets beat up once in a while. Hang on to him, or that is what I would do.

47 Ks, 35 BBs... not a good ratio.

I traded him while his ERA was still good and am glad I did. With all those walks, I knew it would just be a matter of time before things got ugly.

Webb may eventually be a very good pitcher, but right now he has no control. I wouldn't drop him, but keep him on the bench for now.

Why is everyone so down on Brandon Webb?

:-? Maybe because he's given up 7 ER in back to back starts or maybe because he's walked 35 men in only 64.1 innings or maybe because he's given up 6 HR this year, compared to only 12 HR last year in about three times as many innings pitched. ;-)

I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure his K numbers aren't too great.

Why so down on Webb? Well, let's look at his unspectacular minor league numbers:

W L WPct ERA G GS CG SHO GF SV IP H R ER HR BB SO
17 18 .486 3.72 72 58 1 2 356.0 350 184 147 13 125 323

He was a sub-.500 pitcher with a decent ERA whose K:BB ratio was 2.5. His WHIP was a very mediocre 1.33. Yeah, he had a great rookie season in the majors, but he was not a heralded prospect and his minor league career was solid but hardly overwhelming. Obviously anybody who thought he was destined for acehood ignored his minor league history, which is a good indicator of future success for young pitchers. His downfall does not surprise me at all.
Oliver Perez watch

3-3, 3.74 ERA, 1.15 WHIP in 10 starts

23 BB, 8 HR and 72 K in 65 IP (9.97 K/9)

2 complete games, 1 shutout

He's definitely had control issues but they were decreasing his last two minor league years and last year at the MLB level. I'm not sure who thought he'd be an ace but if he gets those walk ratios down to last year's level he'll be fine. The ERA and Winning% from the minor leagues don't mean a heck of a lot.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
