Will Yanks Let Contreras Pitch vs. Red Sox?

Postby d18Mike » Wed Jun 23, 2004 2:43 pm

If the Yankees stay in rotation, Contreras will face the Red Sox next week -- the team against which he owns a mind-boggling 18.00 ERA and 3.10 WHIP in 4 games against. It could be yet another Fantasy Baseball GM's nightmare come to life.

If you're Torre, what do you do?

Run him out there or skip the start?

Yeah I would think he gets the ball, even if the Sox do own him. His family is with him now so he may use that start as a way to show everyone that he's finally relaxed (like he says he is) by pitching well gainst a team that has his number.

Reality-wise I think he'll pitch and I'm hoping if he gets slaughtered--for obvious reasons :-D

Fantasy-wise it's interesting, I kinda hope he does well because that'll be a big sign to me that he's putting it together and could be a nice guy to have in the 2nd half.

I wouldn't start him for fantasy, but if I were Torre I would pitch him to show that he has the confidence of the manager. If he has a good game that might boost his confidence for other starts and he will start to pitch like he did at the end of last year.

If he gets rocked again then he might lose some confidence, but not as much as he would if he were benched.

He is supposed to pitch this Saturday (06/26) against the Mets, pending his return from Florida. That would have him going against Boston on the 1st of July. Depending on how he does against the Mets and Brown's health, they could always just push him back a day and start him on the 2nd against the Mets again.

I don't think they have too many choices, though...

If the Yanks go with a 5 man rotation Contreras will pitch next week against the Mets not Boston.
