Affeldt worth hanging onto?

Postby Sunspot » Mon Jun 28, 2004 10:18 am

I know he was doing well, but 6 weeks is quite a while to hang onto someone. I wonder if the closer job will be his when he gets back? Will Nate Field do well and move Affeldt back to starter? With Beltran gone will the Royals win ever again? Is Macdougal anywhere near this picture?

If you have an extra DL spot and can stash him, you might as well. However, if you need the spot, feel free to drop him. He won't be back before mid-August at the earliest...leaving him about a month and a half as a best-case scenario.

If Field does well in his first couple opps, expect him to get nearly all of the chances, but if he struggles, it will be a committee between Huisman, Field, and possibly MacDougal if he can get his act together. Field is the only one of the 3 worth a roster spot as of now though IMO.

The Royals probably won't have that many save chances to worry about Affedt losing his job. I have him and plan on keeping him. Field and MaDougal are not great options.

No harm hanging on if you have a DL spot available. Mine were full, so I cast him loose. I don't see anyone in my league grabbing him, so I could probably get him back later if need be. By that time, though, we'll be nearing Sept. call-ups and the Royals might do almost anything with their roster.

As the others have said, if you have an available DL it can't hurt to hold onto him. I already had Valverde on the DL so I chose to drop Affeldt.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Same here. It's not like Affeldt was lights out in any event, and if he's out till close to September, he's just not worth a roster spot unless it's at no expense.

I dropped him and I have an empty DL spot.

To be honest, it was a silly mistake, but I see no value in having him there anyway. I'm sure when Helton or Abreu hits the DL--at least, the way my season is going--I'd have to cut him anyway.

I'm back. Sorta.

The best thing about Affeldt was his SP eligibilty. I could stick him in that slot and have an extra closer. There's no one I can pick up that could do the same. He's going to sit on the bench until I can get Chavez or Beckett of the DL. I'm in H2H Yahoo league and he didn't get me any saves last week anyways, so I don't think I'll miss him too much.

I havent cut him yet since I have a free Dl spot. I had to cut him in all of my public leagues though since I have other injured players.
