Pitcher Pickups

Postby Guest » Thu Jul 25, 2002 3:37 pm

I'm a close 2nd in a 10 team 4x4 league and was wondering what you thought of these pitchers for pickup:

Damian Moss, ATL
Burnett, A.J., FL
Ortiz, Russ, SF
Burkett, BOS

Any one I should pick up for the remainder of the season. Here are my stats:

2nd - ERA: 3.50
2nd - Wins: 60
2nd - K: 691
6th - Saves 56

Myers, Bret PHI P
Perez, Odalis LA P
Perez, Oliver SD P
Halladay, Roy TOR P
Julio, Jorge BAL P
Shuey, Paul CLE P
Urbina BOS P
Prior, Mark CHC P
Johnson, Randy ARI P

If so, who should I drop?

first of all, wow! you have a very good pitching staff. with that said, however, i think you could improve it by dropping oliver perez (although he has electric stuff, he may hurt you in the long run) and pick up burnett. i'm sure, along with everyone else, you have heard the concern about burnett and the pitches he has thrown. whereas, i realize it is a potential problem, i would still take him over oliver perez any day.

Here's my thoughts....

Sorry papasmurf but i'm goinna have to go against you and say Burnett is not too good of a pickup. If your looking to pickup starting pitching for the remainder of the season I would say pick up either Damian Moss, who has had great outings and can only go up since he's learning from the best (Glavine,Smoltz,Maddux),or I'd go with Russ Ortiz who is a more proven commodity. Not saying Burnett isn't proven, but this kid just isn't going to be able to pitch solidly in just his second 100+ inning year.If it was me though,I would pickup John Burkett. He has logged over 130+ innings in each of the past 6 years, out of those he had only two seasons where his ERA exceeded 5.00.Those are my thoughts.
