Will Dotel Lose the Job?

Postby jacopo2155 » Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:31 pm

ive been hearing that huston street might take dotel's closing job sometime during the year. do you think this is true, i think it would take a lot to put a rookie into the closers slot?

Dotel won't lose the job .... if anything, he'll be traded.

I don't think he'll lose it, like Soop said the only way he loses it is if he gets traded at the deadline because the A's are out of it....

I would think the last thing the A's would want with such a young, inexperienced starting rotation, is uncertainty around the closers role.

Dotel should close all year for Oakland. He's no more likely to be traded than a number of other closers.

I agree with your first statement, but the second statement about being traded I disagree. If the A's are out of it, rumor is the cost to keep him is too much. We all know how Billy doesn't like to spend money if he has talent in the minors.

But no way Dotel loses the job.

I'd be shocked if Dotel loses his job to Street. Yes, Street is a hot prospect, but the best intel doesn't have him making a run at a closing job until 2006 at the earliest. Dotel's got the goods. If he can get a little more consistent, he'll be a top 5 closer. Even if he doesn't, he'll still grab 35+ saves and 100+ K.

If Dotel stinks it up, anything is possible, but that is true of any closer. Gagne will get benched if he sucks in 2005.

If Dotel stinks it up he most likely won't be going anywhere.

If he's doing well and the A's are out of it I definitely see Beane trading Dotel while his value is highest. I think he is more likely to be moved than other closers if the A's are seriously considering going with Street next year.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
