In Season Strategy Basics

The season long fantasy baseball season starts with the draft, but it doesn't end there. Drafting a talented team simply lays the foundation for a good season. Conversely, drafting a team that's ravaged by injuries or poor performance doesn't preclude savvy owners from salvaging their seasons. Scouring the waiver wire and making trades are huge elements of having a winning season.

The early season questions never cease to amaze me year after year. "Gio Gonzalez has a 5.00 ERA after four starts, should I drop him for Kevin Slowey?" No, anxious fantasy gamer, you shouldn't drop a mid-round pick after a few bad starts for the flavor of the week. That's not to say early season activity on the wire is a bad thing, but it is if you're cutting key draft picks for flashes in the pan. Roster changes can quickly make a late-round selection irrelevant, cutting those types of players is fine. Unless an injury is going to sideline a star for the year, be patient with them.

Trading is another great route for shaking rosters up during the year. If you're aware of an impatient owner, kicking the tires on a struggling player is worthwhile. Don't, however, make the mistake of alienating league mates with low-ball offers. If you've played in fantasy leagues for any period of time at all, you're well aware of the reputation these low-ballers have. You don't want to be that person. Wanting to get a small edge in a trade is a noble goal, but the best thing an owner can do when making a trade is put them self in the other owner's shoes. Why should they be interested in an offer? What stats or positions are they looking to fill? You don't need to write a 20 page novel explaining to the other owner why he or she should accept a trade -- in fact, don't do that -- but be cognizant of what it might take from the other owner's perspective to get your deal accepted.

The fantasy baseball season is a long haul. Demonstrate patience early in the season, but be diligent about attempting to improve your roster from the moment your draft is completed. If you have questions, be sure to hop on the Fantasy Baseball Cafe forums to ask it. We're here to help you win your leagues.
